Training is provided in Business & Entrepreneurship, Civic Leadership, and Public Management tracks and in crosscutting themes. The cross-cutting themes expose participants to the diverse and dynamic context of leadership to enable them to appreciate further the complexities of leadership and build a commitment to confronting the challenges that confront their communities. Self-awareness and Human-Centered Design thinking are core elements of the program.
Training is provided to generic and sector-specific cohorts. The Curriculum & Content unit designs and delivers the training programs in collaboration with resource persons from academia, industry, and the community of YALI alumni. The aim of the training provided is to curate transformational learning experiences for young African leaders that will support them in their efforts at developing personally, professionally, and ethically.
Young Africans trained by The Accra RLC
The online training program provides participants with 8 to 10 weeks of self-paced learning on the YALI Learning Management System, interspersed with weekly, live group coaching sessions where participants engage with coaches on how to apply their learning to their business, civic, and public management initiatives.
- Each participant is required to come into the training program with a “Case”, i.e., a real-time, live challenge they are experiencing in implementing or initiating their business, civic, or public sector initiatives.
- The online program includes up to seven webinars on leadership dilemmas that confront young leaders. The program begins with 2 webinars on Human-Centered Design (HCD) & Design Thinking, in which participants apply HCD principles to their Case.
- In keeping with the RLC’s inclusivity focus, the webinar sessions begin with live sign language learning sessions for participants and their coaches.
- The online program ends with a live Grand Pitch competition where participants present realistic, low-resource solutions to community challenges that are of concern to them.
The in-person program begins with a 2-week online phase that includes the 2 HCD webinars and self-paced learning assignments. After successful completion of this phase, participants engage in a 3-week in-person phase of learning on the GIMPA campus.
The in-person session includes field visits to enterprises of relevance to the various tracks and a Grand Pitch competition at the end of the program. As with the online program, the RLC’s inclusivity focus is evidenced in the provision of support facilities for persons with hearing impairment, physical disability, and visual impairment. In-person group coaching is provided. Daily learning sessions begin with brief sign language learning sessions.
