Launched in 2015
The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched in 2015 as the United States Government’s signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. Four YALI Regional Leadership Centers (RLCs) were set up in South Africa, East Africa, West Africa (Dakar) and West Africa (Accra) to train youth between the ages of 18 and 35 in leadership and soft skills development.
The Accra RLC provides training to youth from Burkina Faso, Cameroun, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, and Togo, with special attention to youth from marginalized and vulnerable populations. USAID is the key development partner, and the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) is the implementing partner.
A mindset that is open to learning and focuses on turning problems into opportunities.

The need to invest in grooming strong, results-oriented leaders comes out of the statistics: nearly 1 in 3 Africans are between the ages of 10 and 24, and approximately 60% of Africa’s total population is below the age of 35. Who will empower and lead these young Africans? Who will shape the future of business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, and public management? In order to answer these questions, YALI promotes three models designed to identify and empower young leaders: the YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship,YALI Network and now the establishment of Regional Leadership Centers across Africa.
The YALI West Africa Accra RLC has so far trained over 8,000 young Africans. Across the nine countries, alumni of the YALI program have gone on to impact their communities with their business and civic initiatives, carrying with them the torch of giving back and leading transformational change, which the YALI program builds in them.
The YALI RLC program has a strong inclusivity focus, seeking to benefit youth from under-served communities such as vulnerable women and girls, persons living with disability, and internally displaced youth.
Sectors in which YALI alumni are active include agriculture, aquaculture, manufacturing, cosmetics, agribusiness, the green economy, sector, sanitation, and social inclusion. YALI alumni collaborate with other alumni and young people in their initiatives.
The YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa is looking for young men and women between the ages of 18 and 35 from Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, The Gambia, Burkina Faso, Liberia, Cameroon and Sierra Leone who are ready to embrace leadership and work hard to transform their countries.
