The purpose of the RLC’s engagement with alumni is to foster alumni networking and collaboration with each other and with other youth leadership networks; project a positive image of alumni to stakeholders; and attract partnerships and opportunities in support of their work.
To achieve this, the RLC follows the stories of YALI alumni’s leadership journeys, initiatives, and community impact through social and traditional media. The RLC pays visits to alumni country chapters for firsthand experience of their community initiatives and impacts particularly on under-served groups such as vulnerable women & girls, persons living with disability, and internally displaced communities.
Funding opportunities such as the YALI Community Engagement Fund (CEF) and YALI Innovation Fund (YAIF) are offered to alumni through competitive processes. Increasingly, the RLC is seeking mentorship and opportunities for further training for alumni, notably the Human-centered design & Design thinking training program provided to alumni in November and December 2024.

Coming up!!!YALI alumni benefit from the “YALI effect”; i.e. the opportunity of meeting and collaborating with like-minded youth leaders from West Africa carrying out business, civic, and public sector initiatives to bring transformational change to their communities (Read impact stories). This includes the opportunity to network with alumni from other United States funded programs such as the Mandela Washington Fellowship (MWF).
YALI alumni develop their capacities to lead other youth and hone their skills in democratic governance through the opportunity to hold positions on their country chapter executive boards.
Alumni may access capacity-building and small grant opportunities provided by the United States Embassies in their respective countries.
YALI chapters build their skills in coordination of large events through the opportunity of hosting the RLC’s annual homecoming event.
YALI alumni are distinguished by their heart for community service and their passion to give back and pay forward. The RLC has provided a perfect opportunity to tap into this drive, with an alumni give-back campaign launched in February 2024.
The give-back opportunity enables alumni to give of their time, talent, and treasure to the RLC through volunteer roles as assessors of applications for the YALI training program; coaches on the online YALI training program, in-resident support to onsite cohorts; members of the RLC’s social media team, and technical experts in building the Center’s Management Information System (MIS).
